Spinal-Words explores the connection between voice, body and identity. We see the spine as a reflection of both our consciousness in an evolutionary sense and our self-expression in a social context of posture and confidence. Conceived as wearable device, the spine is equipped with gyro-sensors to track the movement of the performers back and head-position in 3d-space. By spinning and crouching, the user of the device can explore their own disembodied and distorted voice coming from all around them. Body and movement share an intrinsic connection to the voice. Personal posture influences both the confidence with which the voice is used as well as how it is perceived. The performer gets to use their own body as an instrument by simply moving around and verbalizing singing. By confronting the wearer with their own artificially manipulated voice, we involve both performer and audience in this contemplation of individualistic self-expression.
